Watch Movies Online: Full Contact

There are a lot of movies that actually have the title Full Contact, so to be clear, we’re talking about the one with Chow Yun Fat, directed by Ringo Lam. The original title was Chivalrous Thief Gau Fei, and the film was essentially an attempt to bring old world, white knight chivalry to the modern action movie genre. It’s really one of the best of the Heroic Bloodshed films if you’re a fan of John Woo, so next time you want to watch movies online and you want some great action, give it a download.

The film stars Chow Yun Fat as Gau Fei, a chivalrous thief, bouncer, body guard, biker gang leader and general all around tough guy. He really brings some style to the role, wearing a Harley Davidson shirt as he rides a Honda bike, smokes black and mild cigars and wears a red bandana and a leather vest. It looks really quite cool on him, but this tough guy persona didn’t go over well in Hong Kong, where he’s primarily seen as a charming comic hero. He’s really the Asian George Clooney, even if, in the US, he’s been marketed as the Asian Bruce Willis.

The story follows Gau Fei, a chivalrous thief… Also a bouncer at a nightclub where his girlfriend dances. He’s basically a knock around guy who gets in over his head when his cousin borrows some money from a local triad thug. Gau Fei shows up to save his cousin from the loan sharks and winds up with more than he bargained for, so he has to flee the city while he pulls off a major heist to pay the loan shark back before he returns home.

The film follows him on a journey to Thailand where he hopes to pull off a big score to pay off the Triad loan shark menacing his cousin. There he is betrayed by his partners, and must find his way back to Hong Kong where he can exact revenge on the ones who set him up. However, he also must find redemption for himself and his friends along the way.

The film is really just gorgeous, focusing on rainy streets, burning buildings, there’s a lot of red and blue, fire and water imagery in the film, and the result is one of the most dreamlike, beautiful action movies ever made, matched only by Johnnie To’s Exiled some fifteen years later.

The flick is sort of rare on DVD, so if you want to check it out, you’ll have to download it. It really is worth a look, though, if you’re a fan of action, and especially if you’re a fan of the Hong Kong Heroic Bloodshed era of action flicks.

The film is sort of a fond farewell to that era, actually, having come out in 1992, the same year as Hard Boiled. This was just before the director Ringo Lam and John Woo went to the United States to create Hollywood action flicks with Jean Claude Van Damme. Hardcore fans were a little less than excited about those films, but it was nice to see that they’d keep working after the Chinese takeover of HK.

The film has a sense of nostalgia, sentimentality, and a lot of beautiful images you’ll just find yourself wanting to stare at for hours on end. It really is a unique action flick, having used bullet time ten years before The Matrix gave it a try.

Must See Movie Downloads: Steve Martin’s The Jerk

This is the one that really made Steve Martin a star. Sure, he had his day being a comedian, but when you think of Martin, you think of his films before anything, and the Jerk was the one that made him a household name, and something of an institution on the cinematic landscape, which is why it belongs on any list of must see comedy movie downloads.

We follow Steve Martin as Navin R. Johnson, a poor black child from the American south. Being… Well, white, he’s always felt like the black sheep of his family. Not quite as into blues music as the rest of his family, he hears some muzak on the radio one night and finds that he’s actually able to dance on time with this music! He sets out to find his place in the world, going on a rags to riches to rags to riches adventure.

Navin is, without a doubt, one of the all time great comedic heroes. He’s capable of misreading every single situation, no matter how simple, to the furthest and most hilarious extremes. Every line is killer, and you’ll probably find Johnson’s dialog entering the same list as the stuff from Monty Python, The Big Lebowski and Terminator 2, you know, the lines you’re always quoting, even when the situation’s not that appropriate. “How were you supposed to know that was Iron Balls MacKenzie?”

Of course, the rags to riches to rags story isn’t really what drives the movie, so much as a clothesline upon which some hilarious sequences are hung. Bernadette Peters’ warm presence is certainly welcome, as she is both funny and straight depending on the situation, and breathtakingly beautiful whether or not it’s called for.

Again, every scene’s a classic. Everyone quotes the “I don’t need anything but this!” scene, but it’s hardly the movie’s best sequence. The whole cat juggling scene really shouldn’t be watched by anyone with a heart condition, or you may just laugh your way to the hospital.

Martin went on to make The Man With Two Brains and Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. Both of these movies are funny, but neither manages to achieve the same level of consistent funniness as The Jerk. Not to knock those movies, but it’s obvious that, while those two were funny, The Jerk was more than that: It was inspired.

Martin went on to make a few more comedies right away, The Man With Two Brains and Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. Both are funny, they’re both considered cult classics, but The Jerk is definitely the better of the trilogy, and the one Martin may be remembered for.

Today, Martin has gone on to have a prolific career as a comedy star, as a “real” actor, as a writer, as a musician, he even wrote Traitor, the taut, political thriller starring Don Cheadle and focusing on issues of loyalty and honor. He does everything, but The Jerk may well be the one he goes down in film history for. At the very least, it will put you in stitches, and that’s why it’s one of the all time classic must see comedy movie downloads.

Terminator 2 made some incredible steps forward in special effects, starting with the T-1000, the liquid metal terminator sent back to finish off John Connor. This movie was made back in the early nineties, and you won’t be able to tell that these effects are out of date. It’s really incredible how they used innovation and artistry to make up for somewhat lacking technology (of course, a lot of new technology was developed specifically for this movie…).

The movie has a kind of purity to it in that, while the background is fairly complicated, the movie is not. The movie is driven purely on emotion and strong storytelling. You have the classic tale of the robot who becomes humanized and the heroes beating the bad guys. From there it’s all about the humanity of the characters, what they think and feel, even if there is some heady, high sci-fi stuff in there, it’s all about the people in the end.

If you haven’t seen it… We don’t know what to tell you. If you have, it’s a good time to watch it again. It’s one of those rare action movies that actually has enough emotional depth that it gets better with each viewing.

Seriously, watch it again. The movie actually does have some layers of depth and emotional complexity, so each time you watch it, you watch it from a new perspective based on where you are in life, what you’ve experienced in the years since you’ve seen it last. It really is one of those all time great classics where it feels like a better and better film the older you get.

Bottom line, it’s an all time American classic, and you need to see it. Either for the first time, or for the hundredth, it’s always a good time to watch Terminator 2.
